About Leptex

Leptex is building personal intelligence for everyday people. Our mission is to democratize AI: make it something everyone can use, understand, and control. Each person should decide how their data is used, what their AI can do, and which decisions remain theirs. We start with farmers and independent business owners, building alongside them and learning from their daily work. Join us to bring that power to more people.

About the role

Leptex is currently run by its founder alone. As General Counsel, you will work with the founder to build the company and lead its legal work. You will help shape our personal intelligence products, global expansion, and long-term strategy, while establishing our legal foundations and handling day-to-day matters across intellectual property, contracts, privacy, content compliance, and corporate governance. You will share responsibility for setting company priorities, making difficult trade-offs, and following through on decisions. This is a full-time remote role, and you must live and work in the United States.

Personal intelligence raises questions about whose interests an AI represents, what information it may hold about a person, what it is authorized to do, and who is responsible when something goes wrong. You will help define these boundaries as AI capabilities evolve. Where specific rules, established precedents, or clear guidance are lacking, you will learn how the technology works, examine applicable law and the product's actual behavior, and develop reasoned positions that can be explained, tested, and revised.

We plan to serve people and businesses around the world. You will help us prepare for expansion into China, the European Union, individual Southeast Asian countries, and other markets, with China as a particular priority. You will study how local laws, regulatory practices, and business conditions affect our products, identify where a common approach works and where local adaptation is needed, and work with qualified local counsel.

Exceptional learning ability, independent judgment, and initiative matter most to us. We do not require a minimum number of years of experience and welcome candidates early in their careers. Show us how you learn about unfamiliar subjects, use AI tools, test your reasoning, and turn complex questions into practical solutions. You will help improve Compliance Assistant and other AI workflows and contribute to industry practice as you grow with the company. Our purpose is to put AI in the hands of everyday people so they can control how their data is used, what their AI is allowed to do, and the decisions that shape their lives.

Compensation: Cash compensation and any equity arrangements have not yet been determined. Compensation, any applicable benefits, and any equity grant and vesting terms will be agreed in writing by both parties before work begins.

What you'll do

  • Personal intelligence and individual control: Turn our commitment to AI for everyday people into rights that users can exercise and clear product boundaries. Define what personal intelligence may access, remember, communicate, and do on a person's behalf. Establish when permission or human review is required, how authorization can be withdrawn, and how responsibility is allocated when something goes wrong.
  • Global business and emerging legal issues: Prepare for expansion into new markets, focusing particularly on China while also covering the EU and individual Southeast Asian countries. Research market-entry requirements, AI and content rules, and the legal requirements and local practices that affect cross-border business. Where specific rules or precedents are lacking, work from applicable law and the product's actual behavior, explain uncertainty, and develop an approach that can be revised as new information emerges.
  • Intellectual property: Clarify and document ownership and permitted use of code, content, trademarks, and other company assets. Review IP assignment agreements, open-source and other third-party licenses, and rights in customer materials, AI inputs, and generated outputs. Assess IP protection and licensing needs as the company enters new markets.
  • Product and content compliance: Assess risks arising from product claims, restricted content, and unauthorized commitments, and clarify how responsibilities are shared between Leptex and merchants. For Compliance Assistant, review standard documents, guidance for specific regions, and proposed AI reply rules. Clearly explain where they apply, what users need to review, and what their limitations are.
  • Privacy and cross-border data: Map how personal and business information is collected, stored, accessed, shared, retained, transferred across borders, and deleted, including information used for AI memory. Support informed choices, withdrawal of authorization, and applicable data rights in each market, and align privacy notices, data processing terms, and provider agreements with the product's actual behavior.
  • Commercial agreements: Draft, review, and negotiate customer, supplier, and partner contracts, confidentiality agreements, and technology licenses. Address data use, service commitments, liability, and termination. Develop reusable contract terms and adapt them to each market and type of business arrangement.
  • Company building and legal foundations: Help set company priorities, build the team, and establish the operating practices and legal processes needed at each stage. Maintain corporate records, records of key decisions, and signing authorizations. Handle the legal aspects of employment, contractor arrangements, confidentiality, and ownership of work. Build reusable templates and review procedures, track legal obligations, and identify when expansion or company transactions require local legal expertise.
  • Disputes and local expertise: Assess complaints, contract disputes, infringement notices, and privacy or security incidents. Preserve relevant records and coordinate responses. Build relationships with appropriately qualified local counsel in our target markets, define the scope and cost of specialist work, and turn their advice into practical action plans that you follow through to completion.
  • AI product evaluation: Use personal intelligence products, Compliance Assistant, AI assistants, and AI editing tools yourself. Build tests covering typical use cases and challenging edge cases, including variations in language, region, and user expectations. Check whether permissions and reply rules work as intended, and improve instructions, content, and review workflows when outputs lack supporting evidence, contain outdated information, or go beyond the system's intended scope.
  • Global industry practice: Turn lessons from product and legal work into research, practical frameworks, and recommendations that others can evaluate and use. Exchange ideas with practitioners in different markets and contribute to standards discussions and policy consultations. Promote practices that give everyday users meaningful control over their AI, support informed consent, and establish clear accountability.

What we're looking for

  • Exceptional learning ability: We place the highest value on your ability to quickly develop a deep understanding of unfamiliar legal systems, AI capabilities, and business challenges. You can find primary sources, ask focused questions, test your understanding, and put new knowledge into practice. You can demonstrate this through research, projects, study, or professional work.
  • Global perspective: You can look beyond the rules and assumptions of any one country. You are ready to research legal systems and business practices in China, the EU, and individual Southeast Asian countries and work effectively with local experts. We value your ability to build this understanding; prior experience in every market is not required.
  • Commitment to personal AI sovereignty: You care about making AI useful and accessible to everyday people while preserving their control over their data, AI permissions, and important decisions. You can turn this commitment into specific legal and product decisions, listen to the people affected, and assess how those decisions work in practice.
  • Legal foundations and reasoning: You have a sound grounding in law and can find authoritative legal sources, distinguish facts from assumptions, analyze a problem, and explain your conclusions. You can demonstrate these skills through research, practical projects, internships, or professional work. We assess the quality of your thinking and follow-through rather than the length of your résumé or your previous titles.
  • Judgment under uncertainty: You can distinguish established obligations, disputed interpretations, and assumptions that still need testing. When specific rules or precedents are lacking, you can develop a reasoned position based on applicable law, individual rights, and the product's actual behavior, explain its limits, and revise it as new facts or evidence emerge.
  • AI products and tools: You regularly use AI products and understand how agents, memory, information retrieval, permissions, and actions taken on a user's behalf give rise to legal questions. You can use AI assistants, AI editing tools, and automation to research, draft documents, and build workflow prototypes while verifying important conclusions and protecting confidential information and legal privilege.
  • Product thinking and validation: You can turn legal reasoning into clear product requirements, understandable explanations, and testable acceptance criteria. You are willing to inspect actual behavior, investigate failures, and keep improving workflows to verify that permission controls and review procedures work as intended.
  • Initiative and leadership potential: You are willing to tackle difficult, unfamiliar questions and develop original, well-supported views. You can learn from discussion, write clearly, bring legal and technical perspectives together, and help turn new ideas into practices others can adopt.
  • Leadership and communication: You are ready to make a sustained commitment to building the company, take responsibility for its long-term direction, and work through difficult decisions with the founder. You can organize and complete varied work with limited resources, recognize when specialist help is needed, and communicate clearly, draft accurately, and negotiate effectively in English. You explain uncertainty plainly and help the team, customers, and partners make informed decisions.
  • Professional qualification: You are admitted to practice law in at least one US state and are in good standing. You meet any qualification or registration requirements for serving as in-house counsel in the jurisdiction where you work.
